Migrating and Upgrading to Joomla! 5.x • Re: Migrate/update from 3.8.8 to Joomla 5

Use the Joomla Update component. It should detect the 3.10 version available, and prompt you to update immediately. Be sure to backup your site. Disable any extensions in doubt (third party may not work with 3.10) and switch the template temporarily back to Protostar if using a different template.

Note, that J 3.8.8 may not work well with 'the latest PHP (8.3.x series). 3.8.8 may be too old even for any version of PHP 8 since PHP 8 was first released in 2020, your Joomla version is from 2018).

Once you have 3.10, you can migrate to 4.x and ultimately 5. x.
