Thank you for your responses. This problem is causing me a lot of worry and wasted trial attempts to fix.
1. I only updated the template but added some extra pages and as result all the links are changed. Joomla was 5.1 and the site has been updated to 5.2.2.
2. I am using a commercial Windows host. Using PHP 8 .3
3. The original site used URL rewriting. The new site has this turned off so I have links now like xxx/index.php/name of page without HTML
4. If I look on to a previous link like xxx/contacts I get a 404 error page that has not been generated by Joomla but if I write say xxx/cat or anything that was not a previous link I get my customised Joomla 404 error page
5. Redirects using the core joomla system do not work
6. if I create say a file entitled contacts with no suffix and write a redirect it does not work because the server thinks contacts is a folder.
I have no idea what is happening. I used a subdomain to set up the new site it did not have HTTPS enabled. The original site had https enabled
I transferred the HTTP files to the HTTPS site and wonder if this had anything to do with things?
Any help appreciated. I am no expert but I am fairly competent using Joomla. So this is really odd.
